CHAPTER 10
âBess.â
At the fervent note in her husbandâs voice, Elizabeth looked down at the gown she was wearing, one of the new creations from Madame Beaumont, and her heart fell to her slippers. âItâs far too scandalous, isnât it? Iâll ask Culpepper to lay out a different frock for this evening.â
They were attending a supper being held by some of Torrieâs friends. It was to be her first toe in polite Society waters since everything had changed for her. But the dress was all wrong.
Yes, she had known too much of her breasts were on display. For one thing, it made them look shamefully large. For another, she had never, in all her life, had so much of her skin on shocking display. Well, aside from when she had been naked with her husband, or bathing or dressing, that was. Neither of which she was doing now.
No, indeed. She was standing in her bedchamber, half her breasts open to the wind.
âItâs not scandalous.â He was moving nearerâthe sound of his voice told her that he wasâbut she couldnât bear to look up and see his expression.
Likely, he was horrified that his wife would dare to wear such an appallingly brazen gown.
âIt is worse than scandalous,â she lamented, heaving a sigh that did nothing to lessen the effect her new stays and the cut of her gown were having on her breasts. Heat crept up her neck. âI look like a woman of ill repute.â
âBess,â he repeated her name, stopping before her and gently placing his forefinger under her chin, tipping it up so she had no choice but to meet his gaze. âIt is a beautiful gown, and it looks lovely on you. But more importantly, you are beautiful. You look like a viscountess, not a woman of ill repute. You look like mine, and I couldnât be prouder to have you at my side in this dress.â
His words had an instant effect on her, chasing all her worries. Making her feel as if she were as beautiful as he suggested she was.
âTruly?â
âTruly.â He smiled, his green eyes glinting into hers with sensual intent. âAnd I cannot wait to peel you out of this gown later.â
âYou mean that you approve of it?â She glanced down at herself again, taking in the way the bodice clung to her, the relative transparency of the gossamer fabric of her skirt, which was a perfectly lovely Pomona green just as she had asked. âIâve never worn a gown so revealing before.â
âThat is because youâve been hiding your glorious curves in dowdy, shapeless sacks given to you by some distant, ailing relative who squandered everything and left you with her castoffs,â he pointed out.
Not incorrectly, even if his assessment of Lady Andromeda was rather harsh.
âLady Andromeda was kind to me,â she felt compelled to defend. âShe chaperoned me through five Seasons.â
Five failed Seasons.
Never mind that, for it, like so many other parts of her past, still stung.
âShe gave you her old rags and then abandoned
